Martha Stewart Uses Our Shortbread Pans

We’re excited to have our Shortbread Pans featured yet again by Martha Stewart!

While all of our Brown Bag Designs Shortbread Pans come with a book of recipes designed specifically for our pans, third-party shortbread recipes work in our pans as well. Martha Stewart uses our Thistle Shortbread Pan to demonstrate how to bake her Traditional Shortbread.

Martha Stewart’s Traditional Shortbread

This recipe really follows traditional shortbread baking practices, like using salted butter — Most baked goods use unsalted butter. With just four ingredients, this recipe is easy and brings a taste of history into your home. Simply combine:

  • Salted butter
  • Super-fine sugar
  • All-purpose unbleached flour
  • Rice flour

In this video, Martha Stewart uses our stoneware Thistle Shortbread Pan — a very fitting design for her Traditional Shortbread. Thistles are the national flower of Scotland and play a big role in Scottish history and lore.

No one is sure how the thistle became the national flower of Scotland, but there is one legend that many credit to the thistle’s fame. According to VisitScotland.com, “One legend has it a sleeping party of Scots warriors was saved from ambush by an invading Norse army when one of the enemies trod on the spiky plant. His anguished cry roused the slumbering warriors who duly vanquished the invader and adopted the thistle as their national symbol.”

Even though it’s just a legend, we think it’s a pretty fun story!
